Dear Family and Friends,

As 2012 nears an end I am excited to say that this year has been the most successful year of my golf career. During the winter months, I played at a high level of consistency, which resulted in a streak of top-20 finishes on the Gateway Pro Tour. In the summer, that consistency continued and I played my way into contention week after week and that culminated with a fantastic win at the biggest event on the Dakotas Tour. In the fall, I travelled to Canada and finished 2nd at the Canadian Tour Q-School, which earned me a Canadian Tour card and guarantees me entry into every Canadian Tour event in 2013. All of my successes are a result of my hard work on and off the golf course. Off the course I found a personal trainer, worked out with him twice a week, and seriously altered my nutrition. On the course I have learned how to efficiently prepare for a tournament, with more time spent getting accustomed to the greens and the grass surfaces around the greens.

Next year will be my eighth year as a professional golfer and I see it as my time to make a big step towards the PGA Tour. The past four years, I have played an identical schedule and I have been balancing a part-time job during the winter months. Despite this balancing act, I have improved each year, but next year I am striving for a whole new schedule with much different challenges. I am extremely excited about these new challenges, but I am in the need of some financial support. With your help I will be able to spend all of my time focusing on improving my golf game and preparing for all of my new tournaments. In January, I'm traveling to Thailand with the goal of qualifying for the Asian Tour. The Asian Tour has much higher purses and it has co-sanctioned events with the European PGA Tour. In the summer months, I will be in Canada playing Canadian Tour events. Those events also have higher purses and a path directly onto the Web.com Tour.

I understand how busy everybody is this time of year, but I am truly grateful that you came tonight. Throughout my golf career I have received wonderful support from my family and friends. In case you're not sure where to look, the best way to follow my results is on this website. You can also follow me at facebook.com/neiljohnsongolf or @neilpjohnson. Thank you for those who donated tonight, but I will post a link on my website for PayPal donations or you can mail checks to:

Thanksgiving Post

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I've many things to be thankful for:

1. My health - no major injuries, despite being in a serious car accident this past March. Physically my body continues to get stronger and more flexible, thanks to Greg at Premier Fitness Systems.

2. My family - both of my parents have supported me everyday of my golf career, but they've also taught me to work hard and earn every success I've had.

3. My support system - Coach/Teacher Paul Meyer has been with me since high school. He is able to diagnose swing problems over the phone. He understands what rhythm and tempo means to my preshot routine and swing (based on my musical tendencies). When I'm in Arizona I'm thankful for Jonathan Mielke being my extra set of eyes. It helps that Jonathan has access to a state of the art performance center.

4. My followers/readers of this blog - I neglect you far too often with long layoffs between posts, but I know you're out there following me and cheering for me.

This past week I reached a new milestone - I had a chance to break 60.

I 3-putted the 9th hole for par and made a bogey on the 15th hole so those two shots would've made quite a difference. Besides those 2 holes, I had a couple other very makeable putts that I wasn't able to convert. But not a complaining from me, it was a wonderful day, start to finish.

Back in action next week.

2 round Q-School - Dayton, NV

I survived a bad double bogey late in my 2nd round and shot an even par 72. I also battled through a bad putting stretch where I really struggled reading the greens and that affected my stroke. I made a lot of weak, decelerating strokes that came up short.

Third round is Thursday morning at 9:50.

Q-School - Dayton, NV

One round is completed and three remain. It's a long week, with today's round clocking in at 6 hours. The first round was very windy and some of the pins were in tricky positions - down wind holes had front pins.

The second round is Wednesday morning at 9:28. Hopefully I'll be done by 3:30.

Q-School Next Week

I leave on Saturday for 1st Stage of PGA Q-School. I'm headed to Dayton, NV and the first round is Tuesday, Oct. 16th.

Until then, I've updated my schedule. This past week I played in a Gateway event, just to stay fresh before Q-School. I finished T-6th in a very small field.

Canadian Tour Q-School Final Results

Canadian Tour Q-School is done and I finished in 2nd place, which is plenty good enough to fully exempt status on the 2013 Tour. I had to finish top-15 to earn my card, and that fell at +3, 291 - I was -10, 278.

What I'm most proud of for the tournament was only making 6 bogies. I had 3 the first day when the wind was blowing 20 mph and gusting up to 30. During the 3rd round, I was stuck in a funky mood early in the day and the extremely slow play didn't help my attitude. I fought through that front nine and started playing much better on the back nine - I just wasn't able to make any putts

Today's final round got off to a great start, birdies on 1, 2, and 4. I birdied the 7th and 8th to pull into a tie with the leader, but he quickly regained his lead with a great birdie on #9. I tried to stay focused on the back nine, but an awful 3-putt on #11 shook my determination. The rest of the round I was on cruise control.

Canadian Tour events won't start until June of 2013, but at least I've got options for next year. Now I have to start raising money so I can play the tour. Travel expenses are much higher than Dakotas Tour or anything else I've played before.

Canadian Tour Q-School Halfway Done

I'm through 2 rounds and I'm in a good spot, thanks to a great 2nd round. The 8th hole was key in both the first and second round, but for different reasons.

In round 1, I was 2-under standing on the 8th tee. I hit a 9-iron to 4 feet, but missed the putt. I didn't make another birdie the rest of the day and struggled to even give myself birdie chances. I finished with a frustrating 73.

During round 2, I was 3-under, and we had a long wait on #8. While we waited the weather changed. A cold north wind started blowing into our face as the group in front of us finished putting. That made the 233 yard par 3 play even longer. I came up well short with my tee shot and my chip rolled up to 12 feet. My putt did a complete 360 around the hole and fell in. Saving that par kept the momentum going - especially since I had birdied the 7th hole. The rest of round 2 was smooth sailing, with a lot of good birdie chances. I hit my tee shot on the par 3 thirteenth to 8 inches and tapped in.

Thursday in the 3rd round and I hope the worst of the weather is behind us. The forecast for the next 2 days is pretty good. Yesterday we had a bunch of wind and today we narrowly escaped getting rained on.

The leaderboard is updated after 9 holes, so expect to see my scores around 2pm EST.

Canadian Tour Q-School

Two weeks ago, I made a big change to my fall schedule. Instead of heading back down to Arizona to start working and playing in the desert I added Canadian Tour Q-School. It's a 4 round qualifier, and the top 15 players get their tour cards for 2013. I'm trying to move away from Gateway Tour and Dakotas Tour. My main goal is PGA Q-School, which begins in the middle of October, but Canadian Tour Q-School is a great warm-up for everything else this fall - and it sets me up for something much better next year.

This past spring I wanted to try Canadian Q-School, but I didn't have enough money to play the tournaments. It's more expensive than Dakotas and Gateway because the travel is so much greater. Everybody I know, that has played Canadian Tour, has praised how professional the tour is. I want to compete on those levels.

I've added a link to the tournament website and when the tournament starts, which is Tuesday, I'll add the leaderboard.

What Happened in Yankton

This story begins 3 weekends ago in Aberdeen, SD. I played two great rounds of golf and had a two shot lead going into the final round. I struggled throughout the last round and found myself one back on the 18th hole.

The leader was in the group in front of me and after my perfect drive on the reachable par-5, I watched his group finish. I saw him splash a bunker shot onto the green and miss the putt. He tapped in and I assumed he made a par – figured his 2nd shot went into the front bunker and he failed to get up and down for birdie. I hit my 5-iron right to the front fringe and had 30 feet uphill for an eagle. When I got to the green, the scoreboard was behind the green, and it was angled away from me. I glanced at it, saw Peterson on top, and truly thought it still had him at -9. I was at -8 with an eagle putt to get to -10. I got aggressive with my eagle putt and rolled it 6 feet past. I missed the birdie putt and tapped in thinking I had lost my chance at a playoff. Turns out all of my assumptions were wrong. Peterson had bogied #18 to fall back to -8 and all I needed to do was two putt from the front fringe for the win. I had totally focused to making the eagle for the win and made a mistake. After signing my scorecard I had a couple of minutes to wash my face and regroup for the 4 person playoff.

On the first playoff hole, Peterson was the first to hit his approach and he hit it to 6 inches. My approach landed right next to the hole, but bounced to 12 feet. On the green, I missed, and let Peterson tap in for the win. I was crushed.

Once the playoff was done, I realized how big of a mistake I made. To top things off, I had a 3 hour drive to Marshall, MN followed by another tournament the next day. During that drive, I talked to my Dad and my coach (Paul Meyer), but struggled to find cell phone service, which nearly drove me through the roof.

In Marshall, I played all right and managed a t14th finish.

That weekend, I got off to a great start at Fox Run and had the 1st round lead – something I shared in Aberdeen. After a mediocre second round I was still tied for the lead – something I had solely in Aberdeen. In the final round I got off to a nice start, but stalled out around the turn and finished t4th. So if you’re keeping track, that’s 3 tournaments in 10 days, and I had or shared the lead for the entire weekend in Aberdeen and in Yankton – but I failed to win either event.

The second weekend in Yankton is our only 4-day event and it’s definitely a marathon. The first 3 rounds are with amateurs and then the pro’s get cut before the final round. My first round wasn’t anything special until I birdied 15, 16, and 17. I failed to birdie the driveable 18th, but managed a 3-under 69 without making any putts.

Day 2 is the round that saved my tournament. I bogied my first 2 holes (10 and 11), but battled all afternoon in the wind, and birdied my last hole (9) to finish with an even par 72.

My third round was early Saturday morning, but the wind began blowing early on my front nine. I turned at 1-under and the round started heating up with a 30-foot birdie putt on 12. On 15, I bombed my drive on the 530-yard par-5 to 195 yards. I hit my 7-iron to 20 feet and rolled that putt in for eagle. Two more pars and a birdie on 18 finished my round at 5-under, 67 – but I started feeling confidence in my putting and that was crucial for Sunday’s round.

The final round began with a 2-putt for birdie on #1 and making a 15-foot downhill putt on 2. Two more birdies on the front nine and no real difficulties for pars made me feel really comfortable and confident with my game going into the final nine holes. I’ll admit that I wasn’t thinking about winning, but instead I concentrated on making as many birdies as I could. Plus the final group was 3 holes behind us when we made the turn so I had no way of looking at their leaderboard to see how they were playing. I made another nice downhill putt on 14 for birdie – about 15-feet. I got up and down from the sand on 15 for another birdie and found myself 6-under for the day and -14 overall.

On the 16th green I had a difficult 2-putt, but this is when I found out the leader was at 17-under and 2nd place was 15-under. I started picturing a par, birdie, eagle finish – and that became my goal. I 2-putted on 16 and resisted the urge to hit driver on the awful 17th hole. (17 has a lake all up the right side and O.B. all up the left so everyday I hit 6-iron to stay short of the water and laid up with 5-wood – that left me with a wedge into the green) I misread my 15-foot birdie putt on 17 and settled for par, but immediately focused on making eagle on 18. This 312 yard 4 plays slightly uphill, but it’s great for me because I can hit a hard driver and it’s the perfect yardage. My drive just barely rolled off the right side of the green, but remained on the fringe.

When I got to the green, I walked over to the scoreboard and studied it for a couple of minutes. The other 2 players in my group were in the trees and that gave me the time to check all the scores. At that moment, I was in second at -14, but the lead was still -17. I felt an eagle would assure 2nd place and give me a chance at a playoff because the leader still had to play the difficult 16th and the weird 17th. My chip was about 30-feet, but the fringe was an uphill slope and the first 8-feet of the green sloped severely towards me. I would normally putt from the fringe, but with the slopes in front of my I needed to chip it over the slope. The chip came off perfect and when it got half way there I started a “Tiger stalk” and finished it off with the biggest fist pump of my life. I knew how huge that eagle was and I totally expressed my feelings. Unfortunately nobody got the fist pump on video or camera because nobody expected that shot to be the defining moment of the tournament. I guess the fist pump and reaction will have to live on in my memories.

I signed my scorecard, gave a couple golf balls to the kids helping the score keepers, and walked to the putting green to stay focused on a potential playoff. The putting green is only 30 yards from the 18th green so I figured I would have a up close look as the leader finished. Shortly after getting to the putting green, they announced that the leader had bogied 16 to fall into a tie with me. About 15 minutes later, he bogied 17 and I had a 1-shot lead. I watched him drive his ball just over the back of 18. At that point I went to the range to hit drivers because I knew the playoff would go back to 18. Metzger got up and down from behind to green to tie me at 16-under.

Metzger signed his scorecard as I continued to hit balls. Sometime between him tapping in on 18 and signing his card the head pro told him that there would be a playoff. This was a shock to him - he thought he had won it outright with his birdie on 18. Why? The leaderboard following his group didn’t have my score up to date. It still had me at -14. The scoreboard next to 18 green had me at -16, but nobody told the score keepers in the final group that I had made eagle. What’s really bad is that I made eagle when the final group was on 15 green. They heard a roar, but none of the 50 carts following that last group thought to check out what happened. Then 45 minutes passes by and nobody informs the last group that I finished at 16-under. That was a big mistake by the volunteers keeping score. They had plenty of time to get up to date scores. I also feel like Metzger made the same mistake I made at Aberdeen. He played the last hole great, but failed to have all the information. He thought his birdie was for the win and when he was told of the playoff, it must’ve felt like being punched in the gut. On the other hand, I was on the range staying loose, and telling my caddie, “There’s no freaking way we’re losing this playoff!” We went back to 18, I hit first, and pulled my tee shot just off the left side of the green, but hole high. Metzger pulled his tee shot further left and behind some trees. My ball was on a slight upslope with a great lie – his ball was on some dried up rough and blocked out by one tree. He had to play a bump and run through the rough, but it skidded across the green and into the rough. I chipped up to 4 feet. His birdie chip came out really fast and went to 8 feet, but he made the putt for par. I was left with a 4-foot birdie putt for the win.

All I said to my caddie was, “It’s inside left edge, right?”

“Yup” I went through my routine and knocked it in. What happened after that was somewhat of a blur. I remember hugging a bunch of friends as the emotions started waving over me. I saw my host family and gave them all hugs or high fives. Then came the awards presentation where I received my giant novelty check and got interviewed by a radio host. I don’t remember what he asked or what I answered, but it felt awesome to be holding that big check knowing how I finished my round. Comparing that feeling to what I had just 2 weeks prior while driving from Aberdeen to Marshall made it that much sweeter. That’s a really long recap of what has happened. I’ve played some really good golf, but the rollercoaster of emotions has been quite a challenge.

My next tournament is the Wisconsin State Open. That begins Monday, August 20th.

The Winning Putt (and Chip)

I promise I will get everybody caught up with what has happened the last few weekends (it's a pretty good story), but for now I'm posting a couple of videos and pictures from my win in Yankton.

The video's are from the playoff.  They were taken via iphone from a fellow golfer.  I'm sorry they're so small.  I'll try and blow them up clean up the quality.

The 18th hole is a driveable par-4 and I was just off the green. I chipped it to 4 feet and then made the putt for birdie to win.

Last Weekend - Vermillion, SD

Last weekend I was in Vermillion, SD playing a Dakotas Tour event. I had a solid weekend and finished tie for 5th.

The positive aspects from the tournament were how I hit it better each day and my confidence grew as the weekend progressed. My first round was pretty sloppy, with 2 penalty strokes and a 3-putt. Despite those mistakes, I grinded out a score under par.

Saturday's round 2 was much better, I shot 65 and had 31 putts. Doing the math, you'll be left with 34 swings. I had an eagle putt on 2,6,and 11 - and the only green I missed was on 5 where my ball was 1 foot into the fringe.

Sunday's final round had a 3-putt (7), a penalty stroke (11), and a drive into a fairway bunker (16). Other than those three mistakes I hit the ball well and put myself in great positions to make birdies. My final hole, I hit a drive right down the center and was left with 205 to the pin. I hit a 6-iron to about 15 feet and the eagle putt violently lipped out. Making an eagle to finish the tournament would've been warranted because of how well I hit the ball, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

This weekend I'm in Aberdeen, SD. Here's this week's leaderboard as well as the leaderboard for Marshall's event, which begins Monday.

Sometime next week, I'll talk about Aberdeen and Marshall.

eGolf Events in North Carolina and Virgina

A couple of disappointing eGolf tournaments during the last 2 weeks. Last week, I got off to a rough start through 9 holes and wasn't able to recover. This week, a similar story with a strong finish - but too little too late.

My time out east has come to an end. I have Dakotas Tour events starting next weekend and I've run out of money. I've been staying in hotels for nearly a month straight and despite finding some great deals on priceline, that eventually gets expensive.

Rock Barn - Final Round

Yesterday's final round had some ups and downs, but it was mainly a positive day. My putting finally woke up and I made a lot of putts. I made some mistakes on the back nine, but each time I rebounded with a birdie on the next hole.

My biggest mistake came on #17. After 3 straight birdies, which happened because of 3 straight 15 foot putts made, I hit my tee shot into the water and made a double bogey. I tried to hit a 6-iron and it would've been alright, but I mishit it and it ballooned up into the wind. Hitting a 5-iron was probably the smart choice, but I preferred hitting a hard 6 as opposed to a soft 5.

In the end I finished t-14, which earned me $2600. A quick look at my Gateway Tour finished and you'll see a t-8 - but the money was short of $2600. That's one of the reasons why the eGolf Tour is a good tour. I'm glad to be back out here - especially when I'm playing well.

Rock Barn - 3rd Round

I'm not sure what to think of today's round. I wasn't able to move up the leaderboard, but my 1-under 71 could've been a 75 or worse. The round started smoothly through the first 3 holes, but I hit my second shot into the water on #4. I made a 20 foot putt to save par. On #7, another easy par 5, I messed up a bunker shot and had to make a 10 foot putt for par. Then on #11 my tee shot found a fairway bunker and my only shot was to blast it out and back into the fairway. I hit my 3rd shot from 130 yards to 3 feet and saved par.

Despite those nice saves, I felt like I played much better than my score. I only hit 2 of the first 7 greens, but managed to hit 10 of the final 11. Even my tee shot on #11 that found a fairway bunker wasn't that bad of a shot. It's just a tough tee shot and I misjudged the wind.

I played the par 5's poorly today and that's the difference between my 71 and shooting in the 60's. Also my proximity to the hole was further than it was in the second round. I had a few too many 20 or 30 footers for birdie today, which was a similar theme in round 1. Final round is Saturday morning.

Rock Barn - Round 2

Today's second round started with a wonderful birdie on #10. I was in the fairway bunker and hit a great shot to 10 feet. I gave that birdie right back with a bogey on #11 and then found more trouble when my errant approach on #12 buried into the lip of a bunker. I had to take an unplayable and made a double bogey. The next two holes, I failed to hit the green and scrambled for pars. Needless to say, my round was off to a shaky start, but things quickly changed on #15.

I birdied #15 and #16 and went on a stretch of 12 straight greens hit in regulation - and that includes having an eagle putt on #18 and on #7. After that shaky start, I only missed one more green and that was on my final hole, #9.

Round 3 is tomorrow and then the final round is Saturday. It's nice to be playing a 4 round tournament because 3 round tournaments (like on the Gateway Tour) are much more of a sprint. I still have half of the tournament to make a move and continue making as many birdies as I can.

Nearly Summertime

I'm back. After another long hiatus from blogging, but I'm trying to start up again as my summer schedule begins. Surprisingly, this break wasn't a result of playing bad golf - in fact, I played some pretty good golf during March and April. I found a nice string of consistency, making the last 7 cuts on the Gateway Tour. Only 1 of my first rounds were over par and only 1 of my second rounds were over par. That was a nice stretch of playing. Unfortunately I didn't play very well in the final rounds.

I do have another excuse for not posting. My car was totaled in a car accident on March 6th. Luckily I wasn't seriously injured, but it certainly added some stress to my life. I kept the stress off of the golf course and didn't let it affect my swing, but I usually had voicemails from insurance companies after my rounds. Below are some pictures of my car. I had to swerve to try and avoid the driver who never saw me. He side-swiped me and that pushed me into 2 other vehicles.

Back to golf, I've traveled to North Carolina to play some eGolf events. The first one started today and I shot an even par 72. I feel like I played much better than even par, but the wind was blowing early and I picked the wrong club a few times which led to 30 foot putts instead of much closer. Round 2 is Thursday morning.

I made more birdies in todays round than I had in the previous couple of tournaments - Raven and Power Ranch. It helps when you chip in on the first hole. That gets a round started quickly.

After birding the first 3 holes I settled in and hit a lot of good shots and made a few putts.

Anthem G&CC Week 2 - 1st Round

The Gateway Tour is back in Anthem this week, but we're playing their other golf course. I had a disappointing first round. I played well on the front nine, but failed to make a six foot birdie putt on #10. From there, I three putted #11, made a poor decision and hit my 3-wood into the water on #12. Finally on #16 I hit an awful approach shot that led to an impossible up and down.

On the last hole of the day (as the sun was setting) and I failed to get up and down from just right of the green. I missed a 4 foot birdie putt, but I made a good stroke.

Round 2 is Tuesday morning and I've got a bunch of ground to make up.

Anthem G&CC Round 2

I played better today and the score reflected that. An early eagle (#3) got my round off to a quick start. The eagle was a complete surprise. I had 270 to the pin on my second shot and hit a hybrid, only hoping to end up short and right of the green. My shot rolled onto the front part of the green and I made a 60 foot putt for eagle. After that serendipitous eagle, I failed to make a 5 foot birdie putt on #4 and hit my drive into a hazard on #8. I missed a simple 8 foot birdie putt on #10, but hit a 4-iron to 5 feet on #11, and made the putt for my 2nd eagle of the day.

I finished with a 2-under 70 and made the cut on the number. I felt lucky that the cut stayed at 1-under. Throughout the round, I had a feeling the cut would go to 2-under and when I missed a 10 foot birdie putt on #17 and then parred #18, I left the course believing I had missed the cut by one shot.

Final round is Thursday morning. I tee off at 8:40 MST.
