Golf is an individual game where a bad round is your fault and your fault alone. Having said that, I'd really like to blame something for today's round.
The golf course I played today (which is the primary course for the rest of the week) has horrible greens. The winter was very cold and it damaged most of the greens. On top of the winter kill, they aerated the greens 3 weeks ago and didn't fill the holes with sand. Despite being 3 weeks later, the greens look like they were punched last week.
I know that everybody had to putt on these greens, but there is a lot of luck involved with making any length putt. Hitting a solid putt just wasn't enough - even those would wiggle all the way to the cup. The scariest putt was a downhill one where you had to be careful with the speed, but you knew the softer you hit it, the more it's going to bounce.
All in all just not a great situation. It seems like every mini-tour golf course I play is either a rinky-dink layout or in horrible shape. Amateur golf plays the best courses in the state and usually plays them in the best condition. That's why I enjoy State Opens so much. The local PGA sections do a great job of securing great facilities and the courses are proud to be hosting the event.
Unfortunately, thanks to my horrible putting today (17 two putts and 1 one putt) I'm going to miss the cut.
